Celebrating Birthday eve
Bill took me to one of our favorite restaurants, Jackson-Fillmore, tonight to celebrate the eve of my birthday. Earlier this week when we were in Southern California for Christmas, our daughters-in-law, Gina, Valerie and Shawnie, took me out to dinner to celebrate my birthday. Looking forward to spending New Year's Eve near our home in Los Altos with our friends Mary Jane and Pat and Don, and extending even into breakfast on Jan 1 before we drive back up to San Francisco. Wherever we are these days is always home! Happy New Year!

Naughty Santa Day
When we were out and about last Saturday and evening we came across some people dressed as Santas and didn't pay too much attention until we kept seeing them, literally, by the hundreds. We discovered that SantaCon started in San Francisco and now is a world-wide event, the focus on spontaneity and creativity, while having a good time and spreading cheer and goodwill.
We had a lot of fun and enjoyed ourselves even without costume.

Lunch on Nob Hill
We discovered a lovely little neighborhood a couple of blocks from the center of Nob Hill, and had lunch today at a definite repeat restaurant Nob Hill Cafe. In keeping with Bill's plan to eat Italian most days while living in North Beach, he had eggplant parmesan, but I devoured sole with capers. I think my body was screaming for some omega-3s after all the pasta we've eaten this past month. It is a rainy day but that didn't keep diners from waiting outside for a table.
Upon return to our apartment we saw our first cruise ship dock which will depart tomorrow morning, so we'll see it sail before we move to our next and final apartment in Pacific Heights.

Just one martini??
City Guides is a non-profit organization of volunteers who share their love of the City with its history, lore and legends by leading over 90 free walking tours of San Francisco. In fact, we're so enthusiastic about the tours, we've signed up for classes that begin in February to become Guides ourselves. We've taken quite a few already, and plan to take most of them before our year is up. http://www.sfcityguides.org/
On a tour of Nob Hill that ended at the Mark Hopkins Hotel, we learned that during World War II it was tradition that service men and women would go the the Top of The Mark for a martini before deployment and upon return from the war. Not having been there for many years, we decided to imbibe ourselves. Mind you, Bill can't say FREE THROW properly without a drink, but a couple sips of a martini made it quite funny.

Happy Holidays 2010
My first post chronicling our year living in San Francisco sends to all our best wishes for healthy and happy holidays.
We're having the time of our lives enjoying the city, eating out (of course), walking/ climbing the steep streets, attending the opera, symphony, concerts and plays, taking City Guides walks, and doing so many more things without the 35-mile drive from Los Altos. We're now in our fifth apartment in our fourth neighborhood (now in North Beach). Bill has made a pact that while we're here in North Beach we should eat Italian food only six out of seven nights!
I'll chronicle our first five months in posts to be uploaded soon.
For now, Happy Holidays,
